Classic British Cheese & Beans Toastie (Easy Toaster Recipe)

A Classic British Cheese Toastie with Baked Beans

Recipe by: Tara Holland, @mymidlifespices

Crispy buttery bread, melted sharp cheddar, and savory baked beans come together in this classic British-style cheese toastie. Inspired by the comfort-food staple “beans on toast,” this version turns the flavors into a warm, melty pressed sandwich made effortlessly in your toaster.

Using the Revolution Toastie Press™you can achieve golden toasted bread and perfectly melted cheese in minutes—no skillet or panini press required. It’s an easy lunch, quick dinner, or cozy late-night snack that delivers big comfort with simple ingredients.

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 3–4 minutes
Makes: 1 sandwich

Equipment:

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp. softened unsalted butter
  • 2 slices white bread
  • ½ packed cup (2 oz.) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ¼ cup (1.5 oz.) canned baked beans (Bush's Best original), excess juice drained
  • 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • Cherry tomato salad (optional)

Directions:

  1. Spread ½ tsp. butter on each slice of bread. Divide the shredded cheese equally between the two pieces of bread, pressing the cheese to stick to the butter to entirely cover the bread.
  2. In a small bowl, stir to combine the baked beans with the Worcestershire sauce and spoon into the center of one slice of bread.
  3. Carefully flip the other piece of bread, cheese side down, to close the sandwich. Press firmly to flatten and seal the sandwich together.
  4. Place the sandwich into the Toastie Press and clamp shut. Insert into your Revolution toaster and select the Toastie Press setting on high. Toast until golden brown and melted.
  5. Cut diagonally and enjoy your cheese and beans toastie.

    Why This Toastie Works

This recipe combines two British comfort food favorites—cheese toasties and beans on toast—into one crispy, handheld sandwich. The cheese melts into the bread while the baked beans add savory sweetness and texture, creating a perfectly balanced bite.

Using a Toastie Press seals the sandwich edges, keeps the filling contained, and allows it to cook evenly in a standard slot toaster without a skillet or large appliance.

What Is a British Cheese Toastie?

A British cheese toastie is the UK’s version of a grilled cheese sandwich—made with buttered bread and melted cheese, usually sharp cheddar, toasted until golden and crisp. While American grilled cheese is typically cooked in a skillet, toasties in the UK are often made using a sandwich press or toastie maker, which presses the bread together and melts the filling evenly.

In many British cafés and homes, toasties are also paired with baked beans in tomato sauce, inspired by the traditional comfort dish beans on toast. Unlike American baked beans, which are often sweetened with molasses, British baked beans are lighter and served in a savory tomato sauce, making them a natural pairing with cheddar cheese and toasted bread. Combining melted cheese with baked beans creates a rich, comforting sandwich that brings together two beloved British staples.

Can You Make Grilled Cheese in a Toaster?

Yes — with a toastie press, you can safely make grilled cheese directly in a slot toaster. The press holds the sandwich together, seals the edges, and prevents cheese from dripping into the toaster while the bread toasts and the filling melts.

Using a toastie press allows you to get the same crispy bread and melted cheese you’d expect from a skillet or panini press, but with less mess and no stovetop required. It’s a simple way to make toasted sandwiches, grilled cheese, quesadillas, and other quick meals using any standard toaster.
